Connolly poised for move - August 17, 2000

Irish international striker David Connolly looks set to end his Feyenoord Hell with a move to Dutch rivals Heerenveen.

Rotterdam giants Feyenoord have told Connolly he has no future at the club and have listened to offers from Vitesse Arnhem, Groningen and now Heerenveen in a bid to offload the former Watford striker’s £20,000-a-week wage bill.

Unfashionable Heerenveen emerged as favourites after coach Foppe de Haan spoke to Feyenoord yesterday.

Heerenveen finished second in the Dutch top-flight last season, qualifying for the Champions League. They see Connolly as the ideal player to lead their attack in the group stages of the competition.

Connolly’s Feyenoord misery began when coach Ari Haan was sacked just weeks after signing the Irishman two years ago. Connolly spent last season in the Dutch second division with Excelsior – but he exited interest from other division one clubs after topping the scoring charts with 29 goals and earning the division two Player of the Year award.
