Stockport must give Daly his chance - September 22, 2000

Republic of Ireland underage international Jonathan Daly continued his goalscoring form for the Stockport reserves during the week and it is now time that he was given a chance in the first team.

Daly was on outstanding form for Stockport in their pre-season programme and looked certain to figure in Stockport's bid to battle off relegation from the English First Division.

But he has only be used once in the club's first ten games. Now, however, with the news that Tony Dinning has moved to Wolves it must be the time for the youngster to get his chance.

Stockport kicked off the season with a surprising 3-1 win at Gillingham but since then the wheels have come off slightly. In the nine games since they have failed to win any - including two losses to third-division Blackpool in the Worthington Cup.

Daly saved the reserves' blushes during the week when he entered the fray after 60 minutes, with his team losing 1-0 to Runcorn in the Cheshire Senior Cup first round.

He was involved in the equaliser from Fraser McLachlan and was again involved in the goal from Phil Carratt which put his team 2-1 up.

He then went solo and scored the next two goals to give his team a face-saving win. Daly, for a big man, is equally at ease on the ground as he is in the air.

His first goal was a well-taken header and he doubled his tally with a blistering volley.
