Cyprus go second - November 16, 2000 Cyprus 5 Andorra 0 Cyprus moved up to second place in Ireland's World Cup qualifying group with a record 5-0 win over Andorra last night. The Cypriots got the start they wanted when Yiannakis Okkas stabbed home from close range with just ten minutes on the clock and the same player followed up with a second eight minutes later. Marios Agathocleous made it 3-0 just before half time and Cyprus were well on the way to their biggest-ever international win. Cyprus fluffed a number of clear-cut chances before Mario Christodoulou increased their lead further on the three-quarter mark. And right at the death, Milenko Spoljaric bagged the fifth from the penalty spot. Cyprus now lie second in Group Two with six points from three games, with Andorra firmly rooted to the bottom - zero points from four outings. But both Cyprus' wins so far have been against the Andorrans. The Cypriots next face Ireland on March 24, with Ireland travelling to Barcelona to play Andorra four days later. |
