Cunningham could miss start of season - July 20, 2000

Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham could miss the start of the new season with his club, Wimbledon. This could be very bad news for Ireland, who go into their World Cup qualifying campaign in September.

Kenny underwent a hernia operation six weeks ago for a groin problem which plagued him all season. But after returning to Selhurst Park for pre-season the Irish hero has had to take a sideline view of things.

He has admitted that he is still weeks away from being able to kick a ball - which makes him very doubtful for Wimbledon's opening game in Division One against Tranmere Rovers.

Kenny said: "I am quite pleased with the way things are going so far. Obviously week by week it's getting that little bit better, but I think in all honesty I am quite a few weeks from being anywhere near match fit.

"The first game of the season or shortly after is my target and should the progress I am making continue then I am sure I won't be far away - but I think looking at featuring in any pre-season matches is little too optimistic."
