Back to England for Coyle? - September 8, 2000 Thirty-four-year-old Owen Coyle could be set to try his luck in England for the second time in his long career if he can agree a deal with Carlisle United. The former Irish international has spent most of his 15-year career in Scottish football - except for one foray into England with Bolton Wanderers, where he spent two years from 1995 to '97. Coyle is currently on the books at Scottish Premier side Dunfermline but the club have transfer-listed him in an attempt to cut their wage bill. Money could be the stumbling block to Coyle moving south as it is reckoned that the player is one of the highest paid at the Scottish club. Third-division Carlisle just missed relegation from the Football League last season - finishing second from bottom on goal difference only - and they hope for better times this year. They have had a good start, with only one loss from five games, but manager Ian Atkins is taking nothing for granted and he sees Coyle as a man who could add 20 goals to their campaign. Coyle will be available at a reasonable price, but he will have to take a significant wage cut to join the Cumbrians. With this in mind, it is believed that Atkins is also exploring the possibility of taking Coyle on loan. |
