Cork wind back the clock - December 18, 2000
Cork City 3 Kilkenny City 1
Cork wound back the clock yesterday by starting Pat Morley and John Caulfield up front - and by half time the wily old duo had the Leesiders two up against bottom side Kilkenny.
It took just six minutes for Pat Morley to move himself up another notch on the table of all-time League of Ireland scorers. Mark Herrick swung in a cross and Morley outjumped Kilkenny 'keeper Matt Nelson to nod home goal number 178.
Morley is now joint second with Turlough O'Connor in the all-time list, behind only the great Brendan Bradley.
But Kilkenny scored a cracking equaliser three minutes later. Carlos Rocha sent Warren Parkes away and Derek McGrath ghosted in between Greg O'Halloran and 'keeper Michael Devine to finish at the near post.
With Cork averaging only about a goal a game, it looked as if the home side might have squandered their quoto. Enter Caulfield! Michael Devine's punt three minutes from the interval bounced once before Caulfield, in only his fifth start of the season, chipped Nelson from 25 yards on the half volley.
Kilkenny had the better of the second half without seriously threatening Devine's goal, but it was no real surprise when Jamie Mulligan made it 3-1 after good work by Steve Gaughan.
The bad news for Cork was that they had to finish the game with ten men, after Fergus O'Donoghue was seriously injured in a clash of heads with team-mate Derek Coughlan, Cork having already used up their subs.
"Fergie looks to have either a dislocated or a fractured jaw which is a huge blow to the lad after overcoming injury in the last few months. He has gone to the hospital and while we will wait to hear the diagnosis it looks like at least a couple to a three week lay off," said Mountfield after the game.
