Derry close out Cork - September 18, 2000 Cork City 0 Derry City 2 Things looked bleak for Derry City a month ago - two defeats in their first two games of the season and all but out of business. They have now turned the corner and have become one of the form teams in the Eircom League. They travelled to Turner's Cross on Sunday to take on the only unbeaten team in the Premier League and came away with all three points. Their play fully merited the win. They controlled the pace of the game and despite coming under severe pressure in the second half they held out for all three points. Cork can have only themselves to blame for the loss. They allowed Paddy McLaughlin too much space in the penalty area and when Eddie McCallion crossed over from a corner in the 10th minute the midfielder had the easy task of heading home unchallenged. The lead was what Derry were looking for and they slowed down the game from there on. Cork were toothless in attack, never really forcing Derry goalkeeper John Connolly into any serious action. With time running out Derry made sure of their third win on the trot when Eamonn Doherty broke from inside his own half and crossed for substitute Darren McCaul who stroked the ball home at the near post. Cork manager Derek Mountfield kept his players behind for 30 minutes after the game and later said: "We have had a serious heart-to-heart talk and hopefully a constructive one. "There is not too much wrong, we played far better in the second half than we have done for some time and hopefully before too long things are going to click."
