Cork crash out at Turner's Cross - August 25, 2000 Cork City 0 Lausanne Sports 1 Cork City lost 1-0 for the second time against Lausanne Sports of Switzerland in the UEFA Cup tie at Turner's Cross last night. Cork went into the game in a confident mood. They thought they would be able to overturn the one-goal disadvantage from the first leg but it was not to be and now they must concentrate on domestic affairs. Cork started nervously and never really created any chances until they went behind in the 61st minute to a diving header from Stephane Gobet. Manager Derek Mountfield had just replaced the ineffective John Cotter with John Caulfield and then straight away was forced into another change when he brought on Irish u21 international Greg O'Halloran for Delaney. The changes made the impact expected and Cork took the game to the visitors in a bid to complete the near-impossible task of scoring three unanswered goals. On the night, though, their luck was out. Ollie Cahill saw his goalbound effort deflected over and Colin O'Brien's fierce drive from 20-yards went narrowly wide. Pat Morley had Cork's best chance of the game in the 77th minute when he was left free in front of the Lausanne goalkeeper but his shot from six yards rebounded of Rapo and Cahill's rebound was blocked on the line. Mountfield said after the game: "On the day we just weren't good enough and we can play a lot better than that."
