Cork hit with a late goal - August 11, 2000 Lausanne Sport 1 Cork City 0 Cork City travelled to Switzerland last night to do a defensive job and they did it to near perfection - bar a lapse in the 89th minute which cost them a draw. Derek Mountfield, in charge of his first competitive game with the Leesiders, started the game with only one forward on the field. The packed midfield gave the Swiss little hope of breaking down his team and things got even worse for the home team just before half time when Olivier Baudry was red-carded for an elbow on Mark Herrick. Mountfield saw his chance to win the game and sacrificed Patsy Freyne for John Caulfield in the 59th minute to chase the win. The goal never came but it looked as if Cork would earn a creditable draw until Cedric Horjak sidefooted Lausanne into the lead in the 89th minute. The return leg in Cork should be an occasion to savour. Without a doubt the Leesiders will turn out in force in a bid to shout their team to ultimate victory and a place in the UEFA Cup first round proper. "This tie is certainly not over," said a philosophical Mountfield. "It's only half time as we like to say and, having watched Lausanne at first hand, I feel they are beatable."
