Cork part company with Mountfield - January 30,
2001
Derek Mountfield has been sacked as Cork City boss after just six months in charge. The former Everton and Aston Villa defender met with the board yesterday afternoon to hammer out a compensation package and an official announcement is expected to day.
Assistant Liam Murphy will take over in a caretaker role for the second time this season. Murphy stepped in when Mountfield's predecessor, Colin Murphy, quit to join Leicester after just a few weeks in charge earlier in the season.
Mountfield has been under increasing pressure since City lost their FAI Cup replay to Longford at Turner's Cross a fortnight ago. Another home defeat - this time to Shamrock Rovers in the league - followed and the last straw came on Sunday when Cork were humiliated by St. Pat's at the Cross.
The club's directors retired to the boardroom at half time, by which time City were already trailing 4-0.
Cork will now seek their fourth manager of the year. Dave Barry quit at the end of last season, Colin Murphy was in charge for the close-season Supercup and Mountfield took over a fortnight before the league campaign began.
Senior players like Patsy Freyne, Pat Morley and John Caulfield could be in the running.
