Gaughan boost for Cork - January 4, 2001

On-loan midfielder Steve Gaughan has boosted Cork City by agreeing to stay at Turners Cross for another month.

Halifax Town player Gaughan was due to return to England yesterday after completing three months in Cork. But manager Derek Mountfield has persuaded him to stay until February and Gaughan will now be available for Saturday's FAI Cup trip to Longford Town.

Now Mountfield hopes to sign the player permanently.

"Steve's decision to stay for at least another month is the perfect boost ahead of what promises to be a very tricky FAI Cup game up in Longford at the weekend," the manager said.

"I am very interested in getting him to sign a full time contract with us but he has to decide for himself what he wants to do. I would be very hopeful of his eventually deciding to stay but there are a lot of things that will have to be sorted out before such a decision is reached by Steve.

"If he does sign for us then he knows that realistically he will be saying goodbye to playing in England again but he has really settled in with the players at the club and has enjoyed his three months which is why I am cautiously confident of his staying on full time."

Gaughan's availability for Saturday eases Mountfield's midfield worries, with Patsy Freyne almost certainly ruled out with a knee injury incurred against Rockmount in a Munster Senior League game last week.
