Mountfield tells Gaughan: don't go! - November 30, 2000
Cork City boss Derek Mountfield will bid to persuade midfielder Steve Gaughan not to return to England in the New Year.
The on-loan Halifax player's three-month deal runs out on January 5, but Mountfield is desperate to retain Gaughan's services until the end of the season. The 30-year-old Englishman has been an ever-present for Cork since his arrival last month.
Mountfield has also gone back across channel in his search for a new striker - despite splurging £15,000 on James Mulligan at the end of August. The former Everton player has sent out feelers for two English-based players.
"Ten goals from 15 league games is a very poor return and while I am not blaming my two strikers I have been on the look out for an additional centre forward for some time and I'm hoping to hear back from enquiries I made earlier this week," said Mountfield.
