Connolly returns to Feyenoord - December 12, 2000

David Connolly could is to have one more chance to prove himself at Feyenoord after the Dutch league leaders recalled the Irish international from his loan spell with feeder club Excelsior.

Connolly became the highest-paid player in the Dutch league when he secured a dream move from Watford to Feyenoord but quickly it all went wrong.

Connolly was signed by manager Ari Haan but by the start of the season Haan was sacked and Leo Beenhakker took charge of team affairs. From the outset Beenhakker didn't fancy Connolly and the player became frozen out at the club.

After just one appearance Connolly was loaned out first to Wolves and then to Feyenoord's feeder club, Excelsior, where he scored 29 goals in his first season.

Now Connolly's goal exploits in the current campaign with Excelsior have convinced Feyenoord to recall him.

David has scored 16 goals in 19 games, including thirteen in the Dutch Toto Division which have lifted Excelsior to the top of the table.

Feyenoord - currently leading the Dutch top division - have decided to try and harness some of this form in front of goal so instead of calling him back after the winter break as expected they have decided to bring him back straight away.

A Feyenoord spokesman said Connolly would stay at the De Kuip at leats until the end of his current contract this summer.
