UUJ new favourites as UCD stumble - February 21,
2001
Pre-tournament favourites UCD slid to a 1-1 draw with Maynooth in the Collingwood Cup - Ireland's varisty soccer championship - yesterday.
But University of Ulster, Jordanstown - conquerors of holders UCC in their first game on Monday - recorded their second win on the trot and have been installed as new favourites.
UUJ beat Queen's University, Belfast, 1-0 in their second group match yesterday and look odds-on to progress to tomorrow's semi-finals as group winners. Richie Bell was Jordanstown's goalscorer.
But UCD - 5-1 winners over hosts RCSI on day one - are under pressure to qualify now after yesterday's draw with Maynooth. Dermot Kelly put UCD ahead but Donnacha McCormack equalised for Maynooth.
Only the group winners qualify for the cup semi-finals, with the runners-up instead going into the Plate semi-finals, also on Thursday.
