Favourites ease through in University challenge - February 20,
2001
Favourites University College, Dublin yesterday eased themselves through their first game in this year's Collingwood Cup varsity championship - but holders University College, Cork left themselves with a lot to do after losing their first group game.
UCC went down 1-0 to University of Ulster, Jordanstown, thanks to a Russell Kerr goal in the first half. The Cork college can't afford to lose any more of their group matches if they want to reach the knockout stages.
UCD meanwhile had an easy 5-1 win over Royal College of Surgeons, who are hosting the competition for the first time. UCD were inspired by their League of Ireland player, David Quinn - but Quinn and other players may be plundered by League of Ireland manager Martin Moran for tonight's FAI Cup game against Waterford United.
The group matches continue today and tomorrow, with the four group winners meeting in the semi-finals on Thursday. Group runners-up will qualify for the plate semi-finasl, also Thursday, and both finals are on Friday.
