Casey calls for a press climb-down on Eircom Park - July 14, 2000

Newly appointed UEFA vice-president Des Casey has called on the Irish press to allow the FAI to sort out their proposed Eircom Park project. Casey is worried that the stadium has become the property of the press rather than football people.

He issued the following statement:
"On the eve of my departure for the UEFA u18 Championships in Germany, I am concerned that in recent weeks the Eircom Park project appears to have become the property of the media.

"I believe that such fundamental and important business of the Association should be addressed in a dignified and responsible manner.

"Like most people in football, I would like to see the Eircom Park project fulfilled and, with the imminence of important meetings of the Association's affiliates at the end of the month and early next month, I would appeal to all concerned for a measured and calm approach in their consideration of this issue.

"Essentially, football matters are best dealt with by football people."
