Givens drafts in Roche - February 21, 2000

Republic of Ireland u21 manager Don Gives has drafted Nottingham Forest 'keeper Barry Roche into his squad for the friendly against Denmark next Tuesday.

Eighteen-year-old Roche gets the promotion because Tranmere's Joe Murphy has pulled out of the panel, citing club commitments.

Dubliner Roche, already capped at u16 and u18 level, has established himself this season as number two at the City Ground.

He made his first-team debut for Forest last August, replacing red-carded Dave Beasant in the last-minute of a Nationwide division one game against Crystal Palace - and earning a win for his side by saving the resultant penalty.

He subsequently played the full 90 minutes in another league game against Sheffield Wednesday and again kept his goal intact.
