Breen is ready for Coventry challenge - July 25, 2000 Republic of Ireland defender Gary Breen has told Coventry manager Gordon Strachan that he is ready to earn his place in the Premiership side. Breen is one of five defenders trying to force their way into contention for two places available in the centre of the Coventry back four for the start of the new campaign - and all will get a chance as Strachan's team head into intensive pre-season action against the likes of Ajax, Wolves and Portsmouth. Gary is hoping that his performances will earn him a spot in the starting eleven and admits that, unlike this time last year, he is happy at the club. He said: "I am in my mid-20s now, not 21 or 22 like when I first came to the club, so I am a lot more mature. There have been problems in the past which I don't want to go into, but I do enjoy it here at the club. "This is going to be a big year for Coventry and I really think we can do something. We have made great strides in recent seasons and the group has been together for a while now and we all know what we are supposed to be doing. "I want to be in the team and although I didn't start last season I am hoping to start this one. The manager wants two to stand out and you can't argue with that." |
