Burgess brace breaks record - February 19, 2001

Without Ben Burgess Australian side Northern Spirit would be facing relegation. The Republic of Ireland underage international, who is on loan in Australia from Blackburn, added his tenth and eleventh goals of the season to give Spirit their first win in six games.

Burgess missed the club's last outing but he soon made up for lost time by scoring against Kingz FC for the fourth time this season after only two minutes of the game. The 19-year-old, who scored his first goals in Australia when he hit a hat-trick against Kingz in early November, made and scored the first goal of the night when he linked well with Langdon before slipping the ball between two defenders and away from the goalkeeper's grasp.

Kingz hit back but Burgess sealed the points on the hour mark when he linked up again with Langdon before dispatching into the back of the net.

Ben has already become Northern Spirit's record scorer! The record was held by former Southampton, West Ham and Blackburn midfielder Robbie Slater but now it belongs to the Irishman.
