Hands off Quinn! - September 4, 2000 Sheffield Wednesday are adamant that their star player, Alan Quinn, is not for sale at any price despite the club being in dire financial trouble. The 20-year-old Dubliner has quickly become a fans' favourite at Wednesday and chairman Howard Culley is determined to resist any bids from Premiership teams. Everton and Tottenham are watching the situation carefully and both are thought to be ready to make bids in the region of £3m for the midfielder. Culley said: "It's encouraging that we've seen such success from our younger players recently. Alan has done extremely well since breaking into the team last season and let's not forget Steven Haslam. Those two have led the way and just recently we have seen the likes of Matthew Hamshaw make their debuts to good effect. It's all very encouraging." Culley did reveal that a number of Premiership clubs enquired about buying Alan Quinn but were told to keep off. "During the close season we saw some interest in him, but we made it very clear that Alan Quinn is our player. We haven't entered into discussions with any other club." Alan showed that he has respect for the club that gave him his break by scoring a one-year extension to his contract during the close season. He was mighty against Blackburn Rovers last week, running himself into the ground for the cause. His tackling is crisp and he has a great engine and is not afraid to get stuck in when it is called for. If Wednesday had another couple of players like him they would not have suffered relegation last year and, if they leave him go when he does not want to move, the club will alienate most of their fans.
