Townsend to play on - June 29, 2000 Former Irish international Andy Townsend has persuaded West Brom boss Gary Megson to let him play on for another season. Megson wanted Townsend to hang up his boots and join the Hawthorns backroom staff as reserve team coach. But the former Irish skipper - 37 next month - wants to carry on playing to help West Brom into the Premiership. And, after talks, Megson has agreed to give Townsend the chance to recalim his place in the first team. Consequently, Townsend will report for pre-season training on Wednesday with the rest of the Albion squad. "I have had long discussions with Andy and he feels the opportunity I have given him isn't right," Megson said. "So he will continue as a West Brom player and he has already signalled his determination to reclaim his place in the first eleven."
