No more jigs, pledges Mahon! - March 8, 2001
Republic of Ireland international Alan Mahon has promised to change his goal celebration - because the curent routine is embarassing his dad!
In recent games, the 23-year-old - a revelation since moving to Rovers on loan from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in December - has been celebrating Blackburn goals by dancing an 'Irish jig'. Team-mates Marcus Bent and David Dunn have been quick to copy the routine.
But Mahon has revealed that the celebration was inspired by his dad - and he's promised not to do it any more.
He said: "I told my dad that I have started copying the way he dances at weddings and he wasn't best pleased!
"He reckons that people are beginning to take the mickey out of him back in Dublin because of it!
"He doesn't really dance like that, but I've decided to come up with something different to celebrate the next goal we score.
"I know some people think we are being idiots, but I just see it as a group of young lads who are getting on really well and having a laugh.
"It doesn't affect how we play or prepare for games. I just think it makes team spirit much better."
